My solution for Error 0x800F0826
First an important message:
This blog was begun to detail my experience with SP1 and the eventual fix to help others have a smoother experience with SP1. Fell free to discuss other errors and additional fixes to this particular error.
So I've had Vista for a while and I have heard a few good things about the Service Pack 1 update.
Since it hasn't come over the Auto Update yet, I decided to download and install it from the update download.
I started the setup and things seemed to be going great. The system rebooted a few times and said it was on stage 3 of 3 and and near 100%. Finally 100% rolled around. I thought GREAT, that wasn't so bad. Little did I know.
After finishing, I received this fatal message. One I would become familiar with.

Service Pack did not install. Reverting Changes.
Installation was not successful
Installation was not successful
Then it spent 1-1/2 hours reverting the changes. When it finally rebooted evrything seemed fine and I had a notice that I had an error 0x800F0826 that caused the install to fail.
Thats it, no further info or recommended fix.
So, I began my standard search of the tech sites looking for the solution. Finally came across a site that recommended starting two services: Windows Event Collector and Windows Module installer.
I did that and installed SP1 again and it went fine.
Here are the steps to turn on these two services.
1.Click on start and the "Control Panel.
2. Set the Control Panel for Classic View.
3. Dbl-Click Administrator Tools.
4.Now Dbl-Click on Services
5.Scroll down until you see Windows Event Collector. ( See Image)

6.Right-click and click on Properties
7.Change the startup type to Automatic and click on Start to start the service.
8.Click apply and do the same with the Windows Module Installer.
9. Reboot the system and go back in and make sure these services are running.
10 Disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware software.
11. Try the SP1 install again.
12. Best of luck .
Any comments would be appreciated, especially an explanation of why this fix works.
